Your company can face some challenges in terms of business competition, customer expectations, new technology, and many others. These challenges will make you realize the need for building a great work team. 

You know you cannot handle it alone. In every successful establishment, there are usually departments specific to different goals. All of them are put together to do different things to attain a specific goal.

  • Communicate your vision

Before any significant movement can be made in your organization, your team must first understand what goals, vision, and mission you have for it and for them. If they think your ideas are illogical, they may get tired and opt out in the middle of the work.

Like the visioner, you have to be certain the members you have selected are on the same page with you. 

Go as far as asking them critical questions concerning the goals you have set for your company. 

Drill them carefully to be sure they really understand what they are about to get into.

  • Be the leader the team wants to follow

Human beings are built to be inspired when they find something worthy of inspiration. Before you can build a great team, you need to be an example.

You can achieve this through your results over the years and your personal work ethic. As a leader, they should be able to depend on you if anything goes wrong. 

Your employees or subordinates need to be comfortable around you. They need to be confident that they can make mistakes once in a while and know that you will be patient to correct and guide them through. The fact is, not everyone can stand a difficult boss; so, you have to be careful in dealing with them, so that you don’t push away the best hands. 

  • Embrace diversity

Just as everyone has diverse personalities and characters, it’s the same diversity they’d put in a work environment. 

Right from the interview stage, find out their strengths and weaknesses, then, take note of how to assign them to the best units where they can thrive.

  • Trust

Asides from understanding individual strengths and weaknesses, a level of vulnerability should be evident to help make your projects a success. You can do this through team-building exercises.

Sometimes, it may take having to reshuffle or change and replace some members to get a perfect team. A team can not be productive until they can finally trust one another to handle each task.

Also, if you are suffering from OCD, you may have to put that aside and trust that the members you have put together as a team will do due diligence on a given task. 

Employees don’t always tolerate perfectionists well. You might as well just get the job done yourself.

  • Communication

In communication, there may be conflict; Sometimes, conflict is healthy, whereby you disagree to finally come to a resolution. 

The whole concept of communication in teamwork is to bring up a matter and debate it to find possible solutions for a given task or project. 

Let there be an open floor for your team members to speak on matters.

There is something that diversity of minds does to any given task – it brings the best and most creative ideas on a matter, which reduces stereotypes.

  • Commitment

A truth many don’t seem to understand is that more than scouting for the best hands, a team that is committed to a course no matter how mediocre they may be, will scale through. 

Bring a team with the best hands, but lackadaisical to work, and let me bring a team who is not perfect, but is very driven. 

I can guarantee you who will do better without a second thought. 

This is not to make light of the importance of recruiting great talent – It is only to make you see how far a committed team will go in making your vision a reality. 

Have a team that carries the vision with them like the visioner.

  • Accountability

You know how it is when you have set plans for the day, hoping to conclude all before 9pm. Only to realize by 8:30pm, you are still on task 2. 

More times than others, this usually happens when there’s no one you are accountable for. Am I right or right?

For a team to be effective, everyone needs to be checked periodically. 

You may decide to divide your team into smaller bodies by appointing sub-unit heads asides from the general head of a department. This division will ensure that no stone is left unturned as everyone will be monitored on their roles and performances. 

You can make use of platforms like Slack to get periodic feedback on a task. You can also use Airtable to schedule tasks for specific individuals in a team.

In the course of the feedback you receive, check their results to be sure the goal is met. 

Finally, before you can set up a team at all, ensure they are adequately schooled for it. It is one pioneering key to building the team of your dreams.
