I’m considering changing my job but I’m not sure how my boss is going to take it. The thought of leaving makes me feel like a bad person, especially because my current company is not even a toxic environment. Let it be known that I’ve also changed jobs more than twice in the last 3 years. Is it a good thing to change jobs often? Do you think it’s a wise decision to leave this one again? What do you advice?
Alright, so I might not be able to give you an accurate answer because I don’t have enough context on your current job. But here’s what I believe – The nature of work in this time and age does not reward mindless loyalty to an organization.
Your loyalty should always be first to yourself and your purpose. Maybe, in Circa 1990s, staying in a place for 35 years was an honorable thing to do but now…it’s most likely not the wisest plan for significant career growth.
So, here’s why I think job-hopping (changing jobs regularly) is good:
-
Salary Increase: It’s very unlikely that your boss will give you more than a 40% increase when you ask for a raise or get promoted. Oftentimes, people who change jobs every one-two years tend to get up to a 50-100% increase in salary. It is what it is.
-
Faster Career Growth: You don’t have to wait for years to get a promotion. Unless you’re terrible at what you do, changing jobs will accelerate your career growth.
-
Adaptability: Because you get to work with different teams in a short period, you naturally adapt easily. You network faster and sharpen your soft- skills.
However, because this whole job-hopping thing has become a trend, I’ve noticed a lot of people doing it mindlessly. Your C.V is full of inconsistent experience, you lose some of your work benefits or worse, find it difficult to get a new job.
At the end of the day, you need to know why you do what you do. WHY are you job-hopping? Why are you thinking of leaving your current company? and how is this move strategically in sync with your career trajectory?
Now those are the questions you should be asking yourself so you don’t end up jumping from frying pan to fire.
I really hope you found this helpful.
