Hello, Buddy!

Have you come to terms with the fact that the reward of good work is more work?

Well, there’s one more: With bigger opportunities come greater benefits and more challenges.

We don’t think of the “more challenges” enough before embracing those big juicy offers, and we’re talking about it today!

In Today’s Email:

  1. Bigger opportunities equal bigger shege

  2. “How I discovered my career path after being fired from my first job”

  3. Job of the day: Marketing Consultant – Analyst at Superside

THE BIG IDEA

Bigger Opportunities Equals Bigger Shege!

A certain copywriter shared her personal story earlier this week on LinkedIn and it inspired this big idea.

The gist: She got this really good offer (a great workplace with great pay) from a recruiter on LinkedIn and resumed the new job excited and ready to work.

However, she soon found out the task was way above what she could do. It was a new niche she had no experience writing in and had to learn from scratch, kinda. Well, thanks to the work environment—they understood and helped her get integrated into the system and all has been well.

While seeking and hoping for big opportunities, do you also put the intricacies in mind?

Those opportunities are coming with their own demands and challenges, and you have to be up-to-task to thrive in them.

It reminds me of a friend who also got a much-desired job some time ago. It was in a company many of us were dreaming to work at, with a good salary. While reviewing the offer letter together, he had to slow down and ask himself “Guy, are you sure you can fulfill all the requirements of this role?”

The point isn’t to rule out opportunities because you don’t have the capacity for them. Nah! The point is this: while expecting and hoping for these big things, don’t just think of the goodies that come with them. Think of the new challenges, the necessary difficulties, and what would be required of you, and prepare for them.

Are you thinking of joining the Japa train, with plans to settle long-term in a new country? Think of the possibility of not seeing your family and friends for 5, 10, or even more years. Think of the possibility of starting from scratch, even if you’ve had quite a lot of work experience here.

Are your eyes set on a job with a dream company or a higher position in your current company? Think of the new —and bigger— responsibilities that would be required of you.

Do you have dreams of working remotely for a company abroad? Think of the possibility of working at night hours, working with an entirely different culture, and working for a company in a developed country while you may still battle unstable electricity, fuel scarcity, and noise here.

In fact, I think the opportunities come faster and easier when you are busy prepping for challenges bigger than your current role requires!

So, keep applying and pitching to bigger things, and while you are at it, remember that most times, bigger things come with more work!
