You did it! The steadfastness, skills, and dedication you’ve displayed all through earned you the job. It’s truly admirable and yes, that company is lucky to have you. Still, you’re about to chart a new course in your career, and settling into a new job is an important part of the process.
Your journey does not end here though ‘cos we’re the gift that keeps giving [Wink]. Now that you’ve accepted the job offer, it’s time to think about settling in. Whether you agreed to start immediately or requested a one-month notice with your previous employer, you still have to plan so nothing catches you by surprise.
Here are some tips to help you settle in calmly into your new job.
-
Take your Onboarding Process seriously. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this. Onboarding is most likely the best time to get to know everyone and understand how things run. Missing onboarding is like walking into a cold room half-naked; you’re gonna freeze. During onboarding, you will get to know the company structure, and culture and also meet everyone you will be working with.
-
Understand the company’s culture: It’s not only about the handbook or presentation they did during onboarding, it’s also and even more about the vibe in the room. How do people communicate? Did your colleagues show mutual respect for one another? Do they give room for tardiness? What’s the dress code on Fridays like? Take note and be prepared to blend in.
-
Be prepared for a culture shock: Honestly, this will definitely happen. Maybe you previously worked in a place where the boss was 100% formal with you and now your new boss is laughing during team calls and calling everyone by their nicknames. It can be quite jarring even if it’s a good thing. So prepare your mind so you don’t act all awkward when it happens.
-
Be YOURSELF: Whether it’s a small or large team, don’t let this newness and vibe swallow you up. Stand out in a good way. At the end of the day, your personality should be one of your Unique Selling Points so don’t try to be who you’re not.
Honestly, don’t be in a hurry to blend in so fast. Take it one step at a time and see how you feel about this new place in a few months.
All the best!
