THE BIG IDEA How to Play the Office Politics GameYou’ve probably heard this a thousand times: Politics is a dirty game. Now, let me ask you: How dirty is your workplace? Also, you may have heard that when a boss tells you, on the first day of resumption: We are a family here, it means you have to watch your back. So, let me ask: Do you spend your workdays with colleagues or family members? Workplace politics manifest in several forms, and the “family” label sometimes makes room for it. This is not the place for that argument, but one of the people who sent in their stories for this article says: once I see that you’re becoming friends with the boss or a senior executive, I just give you space. And that confirms it! But my point is this: Workplace politics exist, and they are almost inevitable. From colleagues who aim to sabotage you to bosses giving preferential treatment, there are many ways it plays out. I think sexual and physical abuse have taken the spotlight so much that we think they are the only forms of toxicity that exist in the workplace. But that is untrue. The interesting thing is this: Sometimes, you also have to be involved! Let me put it this way; it’s part of the corporate game or trivia you have to play to thrive and move forward. That’s what Maggie Woll says in this article, and I find it intriguing. But you also have to know the balance so you don’t sabotage yourself. In that article, Maggie gives tips to become better at office politics, how to change bad politics, and different types of office politicians and how to identify them. It’s an interesting piece you have to read! So, tell me: what do you think about office politics? Should you avoid it or get in the game?
